![]() ![]() I first played The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth on the Vita and it was a great experience. It’s important to mention the way the DLC has affected the game. Nearly every item, enemy, and boss has some sort of metaphorical meaning. Like much of the game, some use of the wiki will be required to fully comprehend the sad story of Isaac. The story is really incredible, but it’s not something most players will fully put together fully on their own. This could be seen as a positive or a negative depending on what you're looking for in a game. Suffice it to say, the game tackles some very taboo issues that aren’t often explored in our culture, and while some of them are depicted with shock value, some have much more nuanced explorations. There are many other horrible actions that I won’t spoil in this review. Your character will eat pills off the ground, inject himself with syringes, commit self harm, and kill their own mother. Many darker themes become apparent if you look for them, or even if you don’t. ![]() That’s about as far as the games opening cutscene takes you until you see one of many animated endings for beating the game.īut, the player can still fit together some of the events by themselves from reading item descriptions and looking at the invironments. Isaac, seeking self preservation flees into their houses basement, which slowly morphs into darker and darker underground floors. The story starts with Isaac’s mother hearing voices from God telling her to sacrifice Isaac to show her devotion. Isaac's story takes the back seat, making sure to stay very obtuse and up to some level of personal interpretation, although there is a widely accepted version in the Isaac community. Overall the gameplay is very smooth in Isaac, although most of the games depth comes from understanding the mechanics, which make nearly all runs winnable if you have some degree of skill with twin stick shooters. If you shoot while moving your tears will curve with your characters momentum, allowing you to shoot in hard to reach places. While your tears are locked in the four cardinal directions, the system has slightly more nuanced than that. Each character also has a defining characteristic that makes them better or in some cases worse. Your character has a simple move set, the ability to shoot tears in four directions and place bombs, as well as using a special item. The items are really the life and blood of Isaac, each run you’re guaranteed a unique combination of them that synergise together to form effects that can make or break your run. Along the way you’ll collect items that can be anything from a basic stat up like HP or speed, all the way to the ability to shoot a blood laser or bombs instead of tears. At the end of each floor you’ll meet a boss before moving onto the next floor. As you journey through the basement, you’ll meet horors ranging from spiders and flies all the way to deformed children. Then you do it again with the new item in unlocked. Essentially you complete a run to unlock a new item. Isaac is a roguelite, with a simple gameplay loop. ![]()
